I love to give handmade gifts for Christmas, so I will be
posting gift ideas over the next few weeks to help inspire your handmade
holiday gifting.
Today is a free tutorial for a project I called Santa
Mail. Whether incoming or outgoing, keep
your holiday mail organized with this pocketed hanging. Goes together quickly and easily and makes a
great gift.
We have kits available on the website http://www.lovequilting.com/shop/kits/santa-mail/that include
everything you need to complete the top, including backing, binding, ribbon and
Christmas buttons.
Santa
Mail
Approximately
12” x 20”
Cut:
Background
Fabric – 12-1/2” x 20-1/2” – 1 EA
Pockets
– 8-1/2” x 10-1/2” – 2 EA
Fusible
Stabilizer – 5-1/4” x 8-1/2” – 2 EA
Grosgrain
Ribbon – 30”
Fabric
for back and binding
ALL
SEAMS ARE 1/4”.
Fold
pockets in half right sides together and press.
Place fusible stabilizer on pocket at pressed line and fuse into
place. The stabilizer will occur on only
one half of the pocket.
With
right sides together, stitch 1/4" on each side of pocket. Turn, press and repeat for other pocket. Top stitch the top of the pocket 1/4"
from the top. Set aside.
For
the background fabric, layer with batting and backing and quilt as
desired. Apply binding using your
preferred technique.
Measure
1-1/2” up from the bottom and make a line with removable chalk or marker. Find the center of the background and the
center of one pocket. Place the raw edge
of the pocket on the line, matching up centers.
The top of the pocket should be facing the bottom of the background
piece.
Stitch
into place at the raw edge on the line with 1/4" seam. Press upwards and stitch each side of the
pocket with 1/4" seam.
Repeat
for the other pocket, measuring 8” from the top of the background to mark your
line.
Take
the grosgrain ribbon and fold each edge 1/4" and stitch down. Place on edge of the ribbon on the backside
of the binding at the top, 1” in from the edge.
Stitch in place with a zig zag stitch.
Place the other side of the ribbon on the other side 1” in from the
other edge and zig zag into place. Sew a Christmas button at each upper corner to cover the zig zag stitches.
